This team is looking for a Staff Thermal Engineer to play a leading role in the architecture, design, validation, of Generac’s clean energy products, with a strong emphasis on design and validation of innovative thermal solutions.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Architecting, designing, modeling, and validating thermal solutions in ESS/power electronics
Building CFD models and instrumented thermal test vehicles to validate models
Creating innovative product enabling thermal solutions that balance form and function
Optimizing thermal solutions for performance, DFM/DFA, size, acoustics, reliability, cost
Providing clear and actionable guidance to engineering teams for detailed design
Sizing and selecting components for passive, air, liquid, and 2-phase thermal solutions
Interfacing with thermal suppliers for component selection, validation, and integration
Partnering with validation & reliability teams to define thermal test parameters
Partnering with SW/FW to provide thermal policies for control algorithms
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field
Minimum 7 years of hands-on thermal design / electronics cooling experience
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
Expert knowledge of heat transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics
Expertise modeling passive-cooling, air cooling, liquid cooling, 2-phase, batteries, solar radiation
Expertise in sizing and selection of fans, radiators, heat sinks, heat pipes, etc.
Experience with instrumentation and data acquisition methods for thermal validation
Expert proficiency with Ansys, Flotherm, or Star CCM (or other leading CFD packages)
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field specializing in heat transfer
Demonstrated record bringing high-quality products from development into production
Experience in thermal solutions for outdoor NEMA/IP rated products
Experience with validation testing, product reliability, and failure analysis
Proficiency with 3D CAD (Solidworks preferred, other accepted)
Experience designing thermal solutions for battery energy storage systems
Experience modeling battery pack failure modes including outgassing & propagation
Experience with UL 9540A regulatory requirements and testing
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
