Overview

You lead the subsurface work for thermal heavy-oil projects at a global energy company. You find the geology that helps or blocks steam, and you turn it into better well pairs and pads. Your work raises recovery and lowers the steam needed per barrel. Success means pads that perform the way the model said they would.

What you'll do

  • Map reservoir thickness, continuity, mudstone barriers, inclined heterolithic stratification, thief zones, and water and gas intervals.
  • Support steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD), cyclic steam stimulation (CSS), steamflood, and solvent-assisted projects.
  • Find and mature well-pair, infill, wedge-well, pad-extension, recompletion, and conformance opportunities.
  • Set well targets, support horizontal well placement and geosteering, and review post-well results.
  • Combine seismic, logs, core, pressure, temperature, fluid, injection, and production data.
  • Use observation wells, temperature logs, tracers, distributed temperature sensing (DTS), and 4D seismic to track steam chambers.
  • Investigate weak wells and pads, and recommend surveillance, operating, or intervention changes.
  • Help optimize recovery, steam-oil ratio (SOR), injection strategy, and pad order.
  • Assess caprock integrity and geomechanical limits.
  • Lead technical reviews, mentor less-experienced geoscientists, and brief asset and investment leaders.

Required

  • Master's degree or equivalent advanced degree in geology, geophysics, petroleum geoscience, geological engineering, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of oil and gas experience, with significant in-situ heavy-oil development or production work.
  • Strong knowledge of unconsolidated clastic reservoirs, sedimentology, stratigraphy, petrophysics, geomodeling, and heavy-oil fluids.
  • Working knowledge of thermal recovery, especially SAGD and CSS.
  • Proven skill matching geological models with injection, production, pressure, temperature, and surveillance data.
  • Experience maturing well-pair, infill, pad-extension, or conformance opportunities.
  • Authorization to work in the U.S.

Preferred

  • Direct SAGD well-pair performance, steam-chamber, conformance, and SOR work.
  • Pad planning, geosteering, and thermal surveillance.
  • Caprock geomechanics, maximum operating pressure, casing deformation, subsidence, and heave.
  • Linking static models to thermal simulation, forecasts, reserves, and economics.
  • Tools such as Petrel, Geolog, Eclipse, INTERSECT, Spotfire, Power BI, or Python.
  • Leadership of pad development studies, reservoir reviews, or reserves evaluations.
