Position Summary
The Groundhand supports aerial fiber optic construction crews in the installation, maintenance, and repair of overhead communication networks. This position assists linemen and equipment operators by performing essential ground duties such as traffic control, material handling, and vehicle operation to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality job performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Traffic Control & Safety
    • Set up and maintain traffic control zones in accordance with company and DOT standards.
    • Direct and flag vehicular traffic to protect crews and the public.
    • Place cones, signage, and barriers according to site-specific safety plans.
  • Vehicle & Equipment Operation
    • Safely operate company vehicles, including bucket trucks, pickups, and material trailers.
    • Conduct daily vehicle inspections and secure all tools and equipment before travel.
    • Assist linemen in positioning and stabilizing aerial trucks for setup and teardown.
  • Material & Tool Handling
    • Load, unload, and distribute strand, cable, and hardware to aerial crews.
    • Maintain organized staging areas and inventory of lashers, grips, and hand tools.
    • Assist with pulling, tensioning, and lasher operations from the ground.
  • Site Support
    • Prepare work areas by clearing obstacles, staging materials, and verifying job readiness.
    • Communicate effectively with linemen and foremen to anticipate material or equipment needs.
    • Maintain clean, safe, and efficient work environments at all times.
    • Ability to decipher and read maps, and label fiber runs properly.

Qualifications

  • Valid Driver’s License with clean driving record.
  • Experience in telecommunications or aerial construction preferred but not required.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs, work outdoors in all weather, and stand for long periods.
  • Understanding of traffic control procedures and basic job-site safety practices.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills with the ability to follow instructions precisely.

  • Must pass pre-employment Background Check and MVR check.
  • Willingness to travel and work extended or flexible hours as needed.
  • Commitment to maintaining a safety-first mindset and adherence to company standards.
