Job Description: Thermal Spray Operator

Location: Salina, KS, 67401

Job Summary:

The Thermal Spray Operator B is responsible for preparing, masking, setting up, and operating various types of manual and semi-automatic spray systems to apply metallized coatings to industrial components. This role represents an advanced training phase for candidates with foundational knowledge in thermal spray processes. The position requires strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety and quality.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Log attendance and job-related labor hours in the time clock system.
  2. Read and interpret shop routers, work instructions, customer prints, and drawings.
  3. Use precision tools (calipers, micrometers, depth gauges) accurately.
  4. Operate pallet jacks, hoists, overhead cranes, and forklifts to move/stage parts.
  5. Load/unload parts for cleaning, inspection, and coating processes.
  6. Operate and maintain spray systems: combustion powder, combustion wire, and twin-wire arc equipment.
  7. Inspect parts to verify specifications before advancing in the workflow.
  8. Begin familiarization with TSC material composition and appropriate usage.
  9. Train on plasma and HVOF systems, including maintenance tasks.
  10. Promote a collaborative and safety-first work environment; assist and mentor peers.
  11. Maintain accurate documentation and follow instructions consistently.
  12. Keep tools and work area clean and organized.
  13. Acquire necessary personal tools per company guidelines.
  14. Adhere to all company policies and work instructions.
  15. Perform other duties as assigned by management

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent attendance and punctuality.
  • Ability to interpret policies, instructions, safety protocols, and technical manuals.
  • Strong problem-solving and task prioritization skills.
  • Ability to wear and work in personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators, hearing protection, and other required gear.
  • Willingness to report safety or quality issues to management.
  • Effective communication and team-oriented attitude.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 6–12 months of related experience or equivalent combination of education and training.
  • Strong mathematical skills for accurate measurements and calculations.

  • Applies sound judgment in solving routine issues.
  • Actively seeks additional responsibilities and contributes to team productivity

Working Conditions:

  • Regular exposure to mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, toxic/caustic chemicals, and risk of radiation.
  • Occasional exposure to wet or humid conditions, extreme temperatures, high places, electrical shock, and vibration.
  • Loud noise environment: PPE is required and provided.

Physical Requirements:

  • Regularly required to stand, handle objects, reach, talk, and hear.
  • Frequent walking, climbing, bending, stooping, crawling, and smelling.
  • Must lift and/or move up to 50 lbs frequently and up to 100 lbs occasionally (with assistance).
  • Visual acuity requirements include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
