Duties & Responsibilities

Enterprise Marketing and Communications is seeking to hire a Photographer.

The Photographer is responsible for contributing to VCU Enterprise Marketing and Communications (EMC) visual storytelling expertise by creating bold visual messages that inspire viewers to connect with the VCU enterprise brand. This position reports to the Director of Video and Photography Services and the VCU Health Video Production Manager and collaborates with cross functional teams across the VCU enterprise. The Photographer serves as a proactive champion for advancing the VCU brand through creating compelling photographs and DSLR video that shape favorable brand perceptions for VCU. 

The Photographer position requires a multi-talented expert, able to produce still photography ranging from high-end marketing imagery that embodies the VCU and VCU Health System brand including, news, portraiture and basic news/social media video. The ideal candidate loves visual storytelling, embodies creativity, thinks outside the box and can execute high quality photography and video with efficiency and professionalism.

This role requires an ability to capture compelling moments for news stories and portraits, inspire creative partners, concept still photography ideas, collaborate with stakeholders and produce content for stakeholders across the university and health system. It's equal parts conceptual and executional -- with the ability to bring ideas big and small to life through photography and basic video. It requires a talent that's unafraid to push creative frontiers, experiment, and encourage others to do the same.  The Photographer will create and produce high quality content for brand marketing, brand journalism, owned websites, social media platforms and various other media channels that meet the strategic needs of the university and health system.

Candidates must possess a solid understanding of current photography and video techniques and trends that inform structured storytelling that move viewers to connect with the VCU brand.

Particular emphasis on candidate’s demonstrated ability to create brand storytelling through exemplary photography skills.

A proficient communicator of visual creative strategy, with the ability to provide, take and deliver on an approved creative direction.

Demonstrated ability to create excellent environmental and studio portraits.

The ability to manage multiple photography and video news assignments with great attention to detail.

Qualifications Minimum qualifications and experience:

Minimum of five years professional experience in photography and DSLR video production.

Expertise in both studio and location lighting.

Strong knowledge of digital photography workflows, including computer hardware/software, file formats, color theory, image management and enhancement techniques.

Proficient in working with raw digital files in a Mac-based environment and using Adobe Photoshop for advanced post-production work.

Proficient in editing DSLR video for short news and social media stories using editing software such as Premiere or Adobe Creative Suite or DaVinci Resolve or Photoshop.

Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate with a diverse university community.

A portfolio of photographic and video work, where the applicant is the sole creator, is required for consideration.

Ability to create, shoot, produce and edit photography and video content on a variety of themes, including brand marketing, branded news, lifestyle, education and social media content.

Strong collaborative mindset – able to partner effectively with creative and PR teams to meet project goals.

Ensure all assets are aligned with the VCU’s brand standards in tone, style, and personality. 

Deep understanding of visual storytelling for news, portraiture and social media, with awareness of current trends and brand-building strategies.

Adaptable and comfortable taking on varied responsibilities as needed.

Excellent digital media file management.

Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Must be able to work flexible hours including, nights and weekends.

Other duties as assigned.


Preferred qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent training and experience.

Seven years professional experience in photography and DSLR video production.

Experience capturing conceptual/marketing images for brand promotional purposes.

Experience capturing photographs in a medical/clinical environment.
