Position Summary
The Department of Engineering, Engineering Technology, Interior Architecture and Surveying at East Tennessee State University invites applications for a full-time Lecturer of Surveying and Mapping to being August, 2026. The successful candidate will join a program accredited by ABET and will support undergraduate instruction, curriculum and laboratory development, student recruitment, industry engagement and accreditation activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Teach lectures, laboratory sessions and field exercises at the undergraduate level in the Surveying and Mapping Science Program (e.g. Land Surveying Law, Land Subdivision Design, Geodesy, Survey Automation Techniques such as GNSS and laser scanning and other departmental courses as need).
- Assist in the development/modernization and maintenance of laboratory infrastructure, equipment and instructional materials to support hands-on, project-based learning for both in-person and distance-learning settings.
- Collaborate in the design and delivery of interdisciplinary, project-based Surveying/Geomatics courses and capstone experiences.
- Recruit and advise students into the Surveying Program and build strong partnerships with the land surveying and geomatics industry to enhance internships, employment pathways and applied student engagements.
- Participate actively in program and departmental accreditation efforts (e.g.) program self-study, continuous improvement processes, course assessment, ABET documentation, etc.).
- Provide departmental service (e.g. committee work, outreach to K-12 or community stakeholders, industry advisory boards) and engage in professional development.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Department Chair.
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree in Land Surveying, Geomatics, Surveying Engineering or a closely related field or significant industry experience (10+ years)
- Bachelor's degree in Land Surveying, Geomatics, Surveying Engineering or related discipline (if the Master's degrees is in a more general field)
- Demonstrated ability to teach and communicate effectively in both lecture and laboratory./field settings
Preferred Qualifications
To strengthen the candidate's profile, the following are strongly preferred:
- A professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license or equivalent in one of more U.S. states
- Prior full- or part-time college/university teaching in Surveying, Geomatics or Civil/Geomatic Engineering
- Demonstrated success in laboratory or field equipment management, curriculum development or program accreditation efforts (such as ABET-related activities)
- Experience developing or supervising project-based, applied-learning modules or capstone design courses
- Strong record of engagement with industry through advisory boards, internships, contract projects or professional society involvement (e.g. National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS)
- Familiarity with current surveying software and hardware platforms (e.g. Trimble, Leica, Topcon, Carlson Software, etc.) and ability to integrate modern technologies into teaching
- Commitment to recruiting and mentoring a diverse student population and advancing inclusive teaching practices
