Job Summary

The New York City office of Salas O’Brien is seeking a Field Technician to oversee the construction phase of geothermal projects. This role will require in some cases, to have frequent on-site presence to observe, log, and report on drilling, installation, and testing activities, ensuring compliance with project specifications and quality control procedures. The sites will be in the NJ/NY area.

The ideal candidate will have experience with HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems, as well as a solid understanding of geothermal bore field construction processes. You will coordinate with design teams, contractors, and project managers to assist in resolving issues, maintain documentation, and ensure all contractual and technical requirements are met.

General Duties

  • Oversee and manage the construction phase for geothermal projects.
  • Conduct site visits weekly during a typical bore field installation phase.
  • Observe and document the following activities:
    • Borehole Drilling Depth verification, casing installation, grout tremie installation, grout batch tracking, pressure and flow testing, grout sampling.
  • Water management Procedures: Observed and report on water management as are result of drilling activities.
    • Lateral Piping Installation: Heat fusion procedures, sectional pressure testing, backfill/bedding practices, and final pressure readings.
    • Manifold/Vault Installation: Installation verification, pre-backfill pressure tests, hydrostatic leak testing of the complete system.
    • Flushing & Purging: Filtration setup, flushing and purging verification, water sampling, completion confirmation.
    • Materials Verification: Confirm materials match approved submittals.
  • Produce detailed observation reports and maintain a site visit logging tracker.
  • Maintain contract records and ensure compliance with all terms and specifications.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (associate or bachelor’s degree preferred).
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the architecture, engineering, or construction industry, with geothermal or M/E/P focus preferred.
  • Certified Geothermal Inspector Certification or the ability to obtain the certification preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of geothermal heat exchanger installations, construction management, HVAC, and plumbing systems- Preferred 
  • Familiarity with drilling equipment and types of drilling.
  • Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, manage multiple tasks, and adapt to changing field conditions.
  • Willingness to travel extensively (up to 90%).

Salary Range: $75K + based on experience
