The Assistant Surveyor supports the Survey Party Chief and field crews by assisting with surveying operations on heavy civil construction projects. This role helps ensure accurate layout, measurements, and data collection while maintaining a strong commitment to safety standards.

This position is classified as safety sensitive.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Safety Compliance: Follow all PPE requirements and safety protocols to maintain a safe work environment on all job sites
  • Assist Survey Operations: Support the Survey Party Chief with daily surveying tasks on roadway and heavy construction projects
  • Support GPS & Control Setup: Assist with establishing and verifying GPS site calibration, control points, and benchmarks
  • Perform Layout Assistance: Help with layout and staking for bridges, drainage structures, roadways, retaining walls, and other project features
  • Aid in Grade Verification: Assist in checking elevations, slopes, and grades for paving, base materials, and other construction activities
  • Support Machine Control Systems: Help crews maintain and verify machine control systems, including assisting with setup and troubleshooting
  • Coordinate with Crews & Subcontractors: Provide layout support and communicate effectively with field crews and subcontractors as directed
  • Handle Survey Equipment: Operate, transport, clean, and maintain survey equipment including GPS units, total stations, and data collectors
  • Maintain Daily Readiness: Ensure all equipment is charged, organized, and ready for daily field operations
  • Read Plans & Drawings: Assist in interpreting construction plans and shop drawings to support field layout and measurements
  • Perform Basic Calculations: Apply basic math skills to assist with measurements involving distance, area, and grade
  • General Field Support: Carry stakes, set hubs, mark points, and perform other physical tasks as needed to support survey activities
  • Documentation Support: Assist with maintaining accurate field notes, measurements, and daily activity records

Required Skills/Abilities/Experience:

  • Travel to and from job sites
  • 0–2+ years of construction or surveying experience preferred
  • Heavy civil construction experience is a plus but not required
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills which assist with working closely with co-workers
  • Ability to listen to, understand and follow directions so safety is maintained.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

  • Work is performed in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to outdoor elements
  • Functions essential to this position include but are not limited to standing, sitting, stooping, bending, walking and lifting heavy objects (50 pounds) during the course of the workday
