*THIS IS AN "AT WILL" POSITION*

This position supervises and performs professional and technical work in surveying and mapping.  This is a professional position, working independently under the general direction of the County Surveyor.  Performs duties of more than average difficulty requiring considerable initiative and independent judgment.

Essential Job Duties

  • Creates and updates various survey related documents and maps utilizing AUTOCAD software.
  • Reviews and checks all work performed by subordinates.
  • Gathers all deeds, plats, design plans, horizontal and vertical control points needed by the field crew to perform  survey tasks (Job Package).
  • Utilizes recorded deeds or plats to calculate points to be staked or recovered by the Survey Crew. 
  • Responds to all survey related public records requests.
  • Adjusts all horizontal and vertical control points from which all topography and boundary monumentation is measured. 
  • Supervises field crew personnel.
  • Reviews and checks the horizontal and vertical accuracy of all topographic data collected by the survey field crew. 
  • Prepares a scope of services to be reviewed and accepted by the requesting party or department.
  • Makes necessary calculations to ensure accuracy of completed surveys.
  • Reviews surveyrelated maps and documents for conformance to Chapter 472, F.S. and Chapter 5J-17, F.A.C. 
  • Orders all survey equipment and supplies.
  • Communicate with equipment vendors regarding technical support when needed. 
  • Ensures that all survey instruments are calibrated and in good operating condition.
  • Performs administrative duties as needed. These may include, but are not limited to: KRONOS time keeping, and attending specific staff meetings as directed by the County Surveyor.
  • Assume all duties of the County Surveyor when he/she is out of the office or unavailable.
  • Maintain County interactive GIS Vertical Control (benchmark) map.
  • Performs other job-related duties as required.

Typical Requirements

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field and five (5) years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations:

  • Possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Possess and maintain professional surveying and mapping licensure in good standing by the Florida Department of Consumer Services Board of Professional Surveyors and Mappers pursuant to Chapter 472, Florida Statutes.  

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of current principles and practices on surveying and mapping in the state of Florida.  
  • Knowledge of the platting and site plan processes as per state and local laws, ordinances, and regulations.  
  • Skilled in land survey tasks related to the coordination and completion of survey projects including mapping.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex surveys, plans, legal descriptions, plats, and related documents.  
  • Ability to prepare and submit clear and precise surveys, maps, technical reports, drawings, and specifications for survey-related projects. 
  • Ability to operate conventional field survey instruments, digital levels and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and computer-aided design programsReduction and plotting of survey data, and perform survey-related computations.  
  • Ability to supervise and coordinate survey projects and the work of subordinate field and technical survey staff. 
  • Proficient in Microsoft office products such as Word and Excel.
  • Proficient in the use of AutoCAD Civil3D. 

Supplemental Information

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

Work is performed in both office and field settings. Office work involves extensive computer use for mapping, drafting, and report preparation, while fieldwork may include visits to survey sites, construction areas, and undeveloped land. Field activities may involve exposure to weather, noise, uneven terrain, and other outdoor conditions. The work may occasionally require lifting or carrying objects up to 20 pounds.
